You've done it! You've successfully made it through the early days of breastfeeding and you're starting to feel like a pro. But then, one day, you notice something strange while getting dressed...what on earth are those things in your bra?!?
Don't worry, mama, you're not going crazy (at least not because of this). Those are called breast pads, and chances are, if you're breastfeeding, you're going to need them. Let's take a closer look.
What are Breast Pads?
Breast pads are soft, absorbent pads that provide protection from leaks by absorbing excess milk. They are available in several different materials, including disposable options and washable/reusable options. There are even some brands that make breast pads specifically for nighttime use that are extra absorbent to help prevent leaks overnight.

Do I Need Them?
This is a tricky question and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some women never leak, even during letdown or when baby first starts breastfeeding (lucky!), while others find that they leak quite frequently. I personally leaked with my first but not with my second child. Go figure!
The amount of leaking also varies from woman to woman; some women only ever experience a few drops while others find they need to change their breast pads several times per day.
If you think you might need breast pads, your best bet is to try a few different types and brands until you find the ones that work best for you and your wardrobe.
